"Descartes is sitting in a bar, having a drink. The bartender asks him if he would like another. "I think not," he says and vanishes in a puff of logic."
I ----ing hate this sorry excuse of a "joke". This does not ----ing work. He needs to vanish first and then stop thinking.
"If A then B" is equivalent to "If not B then not A", not "If not A then not B". Just in case you're say, stupid, A is "I think" and B is "I am". Lets take this example: "If I get shot in the head 400 times, then I die" is equivalent to "If I don't die, I didn't get shot in the head 400 times." It is not "If I don't get shot in the head 400 times, then I am not dead." There are plenty of people that disprove that.
I may have gotten a little worked up...

Maybe so, but still, there are worse jokes. For example... What do you call a female peacock?

I think beanbrew's conclusion about the joke is close to correct, but it seems to me that the logic is a bit off. The "narrative presupposition" is a property of most natural languages today (ie: languages normal people speak.) If you say: "Bob hit the ball. The ball moved quickly." The assumption is that hitting the ball comes before the ball moving quickly. In some natural and formal languages, the assumption is that the two statements occur simultaneously. I believe structured logic is such a language. So I don't think the "order of events" matters. One way the joke could be "fixed" would be for Decarte to wink out of existence, then wink back in, and say "I thought not, but now I do." But for a more authoritative answer, Mimi can ask her prof this question next quarter/semester/whatever when she's taking discrete math. -Scott

The fun thing about philosophy is that you can argue about it for hours, go absoultly nowhere with the argument and still call it a sucessful session.
That and the Monty Python song.

Is it truely hate or misplaced aggression?
